Happy Christmas 2015

Happy Christmas Day for all Christian friends.

It is good to know that this Christmas is celebrated with much peace despite the coverage about the possibilities of some disturbances that might cause problems for our Christian friends.

The Indonesian government also had taken proactive measures to apprehend suspects before the Christmas celebrations which had contributed to the peace and harmony on 25th December.

Living in a multi-racial and multi-religious community in Medan, it is important that everyone respect each other's culture and religion. Freedom to practice each other's faith is enshrisned in the Pancasila and therefore should be celebrated.

Happy Christmas again!

Refer to the following website and ask whether the materials from the website can or cannot be used in your essay.

Mobile Phones: A Blessing or a Curse Pt 1

Self-Reflective Activity:
The essay below is one of the ways in which you can answer the abovementioned topic. Look carefully at the essay and identify the positive points. Also identify the areas in which the essay can be improved on. For example,

Does the essay meet the word requirements?
Can it be improved in terms of paragraphing?
Are there ways in which the essay can be made more convincing?
How about the use of the PEEL technique?
Do you think there should be more points on 'curse'? Look at

Curse 1: Workplace and business
http://blogs.wsj.com/atwork/2013/08/27/ceos-find-unplugging-can-help-with-work/

Curse 2: Intelligence and education of children
http://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/may/16/schools-mobile-phones-academic-results

Curse 3: Family Life
http://www.familylife.com/articles/topics/marriage/staying-married/communication/are-you-married-to-your-cellphone

Curse 4: Children
http://www.partselect.com/JustForFun/Pros-And-Cons-Of-Cell-Phones.aspx

Shouldn't the essay be using more words on 'blessing' and 'curse' to indicate that the essay is more focused on what the question is asking for?

What other questions come to mind when you read the essay? Write it down. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Mobile Phones: A Blessing or a Curse

When everybody is busy in his/her own daily activities people find it difficult to allocate time for friends and relatives. In this context mobile phone has simplified the communication among them in various ways mainly through its ease of use and access. It manages contacts in its memory and thus we can ring to someone with few clicks of buttons. Short Message Service (SMS) is another new feature which the traditional land-line phone lacks. Its use as a multipurpose device to listen to the radio, to check emails, is not less enticing. Therefore, it has become one of the most popular gadgets in the world.

Electronically managed phonebook is an important feature of mobile phones. Unlike conventional telephones, mobiles can store the name and telephone/mobile phone numbers of the near and dear ones. This feature has various advantages. For instance, a relative fell seriously ill. The doctor should be called immediately. If there were no mobile phones you need to fetch the phonebook, search on it the doctors number, reach up to the phone, dial the number, the doctor could be anywhere within hospital and you would narrate the situation to the receptionist. He/she then would search for the doctor and tell him to go to your place. There are many places where delay can occur. There is always a chance of dialing a wrong number in haste. With mobile there are more possibilities of receiving the doctor at home in time. You type initial letter of the doctor’s name and all the contacts beginning with that letter will be shortlisted. Select the doctor’s name, press ‘Call’ button and talk directly to the doctor. No wrong number and waste of time.

SMS is another helpful feature of mobile phones. Sometimes, accuracy of the message is more important for example, while sending somebody’s address or contact numbers. Since the written piece of information is more accurate than spoken one, mobile phones are very useful. There are other alternatives like fax, email and so on but none is better than mobile phones. To use fax, there should be fax machines at both location and you need to write your message on a piece of paper. The disadvantages are expensive, inconvenient with respect to place, and waste of papers. Email can be received anywhere, but you require to be logged into your email account to receive notifications of new email. Mobile phones, on the other hand, are carried everywhere by the owners which makes it easy from all the angles.

Furthermore, mobile phone is now an all in one device. Whether you want to listen to music and fm radio, or you want to take a photo of your dear friend, you don’t need to seek for a separate device. Internet facility in mobile phones is common nowadays and with this you can share photos and files among your friends. You can remain connected with your peers with the help of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. You can play virtual games when you are bored and these sorts of facilities are increasing. Therefore, mobile phones have become a multipurpose, and multifunction device.

Although very useful, mobile phones are not devoid of problems. The waves that are used in mobile communication are harmful for human body especially heart, kidneys and brain. Its misuse is always a danger. Losing it may lead to the loss of important contacts and since we rely on it heavily we don’t remember the phone numbers of our relatives and friends. Others too cannot contact you, once your phone is lost and therefore there is a chance of going out of contact with some people permanently. This is especially the case with certain people, whom you have phone contact only.

In conclusion, mobile phones are very useful devices. Misusing them is the fault of the people who do so. So what I opine is that every person should make sure that he does not misuse it and be careful not to allow others misuse it. As for its harmful effects on living organisms, more research on the field is necessary to reduce its effects. Since its use cannot be discarded for its few disadvantages, mobile phones can be considered a blessing for the mankind.

Account for the Popularity of Mobile Phones - Main Points

Look at the following main points on the abovementioned topic. Check whether each of the paragraphs meet the PEEL technique which we have covered in class so far (the excerpts have not been edited i.e. it has be presented as written by the writer):

Portability

Example 1
Mobile phones are small in size and not too heavy which makes it extremely convinient for people to carry around. They can just slip in to their pockets and walk around without any difficulties. This is how easy to carry around mobile phones.

Example 2
Mobile phones are small and easy to carry wherever you want. People are not burdened by its size and is comfortable with bringing it. Women, for instance, usually get their bags robbed because of how valuable they looked. And they can't call for the police to report their stolen belonging as they had probably place their phone inside their bags. However, now women become caustious when going out and instead of bringing a big bag, they can just use a small purse to put their mobile phone in or inside their pockets.

Example 3
First of all, mobile phones are light and convenient to carry anywhere. It can be kept inside pockets or small bags due to its relatively small size. People tend to bring it with them everywhere they go without feeling any burden compared to a heavy laptop. This makes it popular among people.

Example 4
There are countless reasons as to why mobile phones are very popular. The strongest reason is its portability. Calculating, browsing, taking pictures, recording, all kinds of functions found in different gadgets, packaged into such a small thing. Almost everything can be done through mobile phones. Non-photographers in particular favors mobile phones as they can still take pictures without purchasing expensive cameras. This reason makes lots of people purchase mobile phones, thus boosting its popularity.

Keeping Up with the Times

Example 1
Recently, Samsung has released the newest type of phone, and they produce a charger that could be used by placing the phone on top of it which the charger only can for the newest brand that cause an increasing amount of people using Samsung causing Samsung mobile phone to be popular. People are using mobile phone because there is an advantage for using it. For example, you could contact your far far away relatives easier, and cheaper. You do not need to send mails.

For Business

Example 1
Many people has been using Instagram now, because it could share photos and videos so when the demand for Instagram increase,  the demand for mobile phone is also increasing. And many business is doing business online because since many people use phone, business that open online could be more success. and they use it to make advertisement.

As Status Symbol

Example 1
Sometimes mobile phones are not used or purchased for its main purpose which is as the medium of communication. Majority of people purchase their phones twice a year because they are a gadget fanatic or simply because they're using it as a status-symbol. For example, if you have the newest and latest phone, this mean that the person is most probably wealthier than you. There are also people who use two mobile phones some for business purposes while the others are using it as a status symbol.

To Relieve Stress

Example 1
Personally, mobile phone has increased my quality of life. It help me communicate with my friends. Mobile phone is likely to be my second friend. It is like a medicine to cure pressure. For example: After having an exam, most of students are playing their phone because they want to be relax and to cure their pressure. It has increased the popularity of mobile phone.

As a Source of Entertainment

Moreover, mobile phones also act as a source of entertainment. People can play games on their phones, listen to songs, and watch videos. These entertainments serve as a relaxing time for people after a busy and tiring day. This makes mobile phones even more popular.

As a Source of Information

Example 1
Another reason is that mobile phones can give you the most recent information as fast as you need, unlike newspaper and mails where time is needed before information can be obtained. This is the reason why each and every businessman in the world has to have a mobile phone. For example, if a businessman has two meetings to attend at a same time, he can only choose one of them to attend. If the meeting that he chose to attend is somehow postponed or cancelled and he doesn't own a mobile phone, he would not be informed making a huge loss. If the businessman had a mobile phone, he could've received information and instead went to the other meeting. This is why mobile phones are inseparable from businessmen.

Value for Money

Example 1
Secondly, mobile phones helps us financially by saving up our money expenses. Mobile phones comes in features like Radio Player, video or Movie Players and the most popuar of alls cameras. Since all these features are already available in our phones, we no longer have to purchase cameras and radio players anymore, saving up lots of our money and is more affordable to many people and making mobile phones very well known.

For Educational Purposes

Example 1
Furthermore, mobile phones can also be used for educational purposes. Students nowadays do research for their studies on phone as it is very convenient. They can also join online education courses with their phones. They obtain more knowledge by doing these activities on phones. Phones are very popular among students as it is an efficient way of studying. As a result, students' grades will improve in schools.
